The United States Department of Justice is run by the Attorney General. Although the office of Attorney General was in place from George Washington’s Presidential Cabinet, the U.S. Dept. of Justice was not established until after the Civil War. It was established during the administration of Ulysses S. Grant on June 22, 1870, but did not officially begin until July 1st of that year.
The department of Justice is made to enforce the laws and to ensure fair and impartial administration of justice for all Americans. The job used to include advising Congress and the President, but when the workload became too big those responsibilities went to others.
The Department of Justice is also responsible for, investigating and prosecuting people who disobey the federal laws, representing the United States in all legal matters before the Supreme Court, enforcing all immigration laws, providing information, processing applications for citizenship, maintaining the federal prison system, and community programs.
The Mission Statement of the DOJ:
To enforce the law and defend the interests of the United States according to the law; to ensure public safety against threats foreign and domestic; to provide federal leadership in preventing and controlling crime; to seek just punishment for those guilty of unlawful behavior; and to ensure fair and impartial administration of justice for all Americans.
