From the Editor's Desk

For most of us spring has arrived! The snow has diminished and the green buds are springing forth on tree branches. Many trees in my area are already attracting the bees as the flowers are blooming. Along with that comes a high pollen count and allergy sufferers are investing in tissue boxes by the case! This month Lady Jess shares some natural home remedies for seasonal allergies and speaking of Lady.

With spring time comes the excitement of beginning gardens and watching them grow. Just as we prepare the soil and plant the seeds, we also plant seeds of faith within our lives, especially in the lives of new believers who are just building upon their faith as a new follower of Christ. This month's issue is full of life and anticipating the arrival of your mouse's click upon each article. Be sure to read the article Mrs. Brown wrote about the Passover and we pray for God's blessings upon your observance of the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Miss Jessica, Seasons of a Heart

I was so pleased to interview Miss Jessica. I have known Jessica only a short while but I can see the passion she has in her heart to serve the Lord and her family. She is a wonderful encouragement and friend to me, and I hope you enjoy getting to know her as much as I have.

GGM: You just turned eighteen a few months ago and you're getting ready to graduate this year, what are some things you feel the LORD leading you towards?

Miss Jessica: The main thing I am working toward is being a passionate daughter and helping my father in whatever he needs done. This hasn’t always been my goal, but over the past year I have begun to better understand how vital this is for a family and I have tried not only to apply this to my own life, but to help other young ladies realize how important this is. As far as schooling after high school, I would like to further some of my studies in finances, prenatal care, music theory, photography, and business management. I few years ago I started the process to get a few of my sewing patterns published, but due to traveling, etc. I had to set it aside, so I would like to get back to work on them, refine my process of “pattern making” and then maybe start my own pattern business. I would also like to begin teaching harp soon. Those are the main things, but I am a rather adventurous person with a touch of impromptu, so I have a knack for starting way too many projects and running down too many rabbit trails with my ideas! However, I am trying to overcome this and be more focused on the things that need done.

GGM: Growing up what did a typical day look like and what does it now?

Miss Jessica: Well, I’m not sure we had a typical day growing up! My Father used to remodel houses to rent or sell and when I was younger all of us went to work together helping him, so each day varied as to what we did. When we didn’t have a house to work on we spent the day at home together doing school and other things around the house. As we got older we were given the option to go if we wanted or to stay home – it greatly depended on the work being done on the house at the time as to whether I went or not! However, for the past 3 or 4 years we have stopped doing houses and have concentrated on our business, the Solar Pathfinder, which we manufacture at home.

Right now my typical day looks something like this:

5:00- Rise. Bible study, internet, corresponding and sewing till breakfast

7:15- Breakfast. Family time (bible study as a family) & chores.

9:00- School and Harp practice. I’ve now graduated to the role of teacher, so I teach my two youngest brothers reading, writing and math. Harp practice is normally about 45 minutes.

12:00- Lunch & chores (Bekah and I are generally in charge of preparing lunch and supper)

1:00- Early afternoon is left for our own personal projects. Later afternoon we work for Dad either doing things like bookwork or manufacturing.

5:30- Supper, chores and family projects/activities till bed.

9:00- Bedtime.

GGM: I've seen you, your sisters and friends several times in reenactment clothes, what would you consider your favourite era based on customs and fashion? Do you sew and make any of your clothes?

Miss Jessica: Oh dear. That is a very hard question! I am an avid seamstress and historical clothes and their history is probably my forte! My family currently does Revolutionary War reenacting, and in the past we did a little Civil War reenacting as well. Each era has its own special part that I love – the only time frame I can’t find something I like is in the 1910-1920’s and then after 1950! With the revolutionary war the manners and customs still have a very English tone about them, which is very beautiful and the clothes for the Ladies I would say are much more freeing than most of the later eras.

However, I think that my favorite era is Edwardian (1900-1909). The Edwardian era unlike most of the other more popular era’s is not based around a war – it’s the height of the great expansion and incredible inventions. People were exploring places and their clothes mirror that. The styles are varying from the long trained skirts to the tailor-made walking suits; from the fine lace evening shirts to the outdoors vest and shirt. The men’s clothes are equally as interesting, especially since I enjoy western style clothes, as they can be mixed easily without looking out of place.

GGM: Share with us what you call home. Have you always lived in Tennessee?

Miss Jessica: No, I have not always lived in Tennessee. I was born in Florida, but we moved up to Indiana shortly after I was born and lived there about 7 years before moving to where we are now in Tennessee. Our home here is very unique and I totally love it! When we moved to Tennessee 10 years ago we purchased 15 acres to build on with the original intent of building a barn/workshop and living in that for 2 years while we built a log cabin home from timber off the land – it was a noble plan, but it has never come to fruition as the “barn” has been more than sufficient for us! We call it the barn because it was built look like a barn from the outside and inside we have it decorated with old antiques and country furnishings. Since then we have built a workshop (which also houses my sewing room!) and a small log cabin for our guests, so we have no need or desire to move out.

GGM: What's your favourite breakfast meal? What are some of the "stranger" meals you've have (breakfast, lunch, or dinner)?

Miss Jessica: Homemade yogurt topped with granola and a cup of coffee to top it off! A close rival to that would be creamed egg gravy over toast.

Since we travel a lot (both across the US and other countries) we have learned to make a lot of international food and we love having company over to either feed them food or have them teach us how to make new meals, so I have eaten quite a variety of things. Probably one of the strangest things I’ve had is Asian rice called sticky rice. It is high in gluten and so the rice when cooked sticks together, but it doesn’t stick to you. You can take a handful and roll it into a tight ball or any other shape you’d like! It can be eaten lots of different ways, like with chicken sauce (a hot and sweet Asian sauce) or with coconut milk and mangoes for dessert. It is a great favorite of ours! We’ve learned that it’s even great for breakfast if you have some sort of gravy for it.

GGM: I know you enjoy photography, do you do it just for fun or as a business?

Miss Jessica: I mainly do it for our family, but I have also done work for other people when requested. Photography is one of those new things for me as I’ve only been in it about 2 years, and it has been a blast! It has been especially nice since it goes so well with traveling. I like to shoot lots of different things, but I think my favorite thing to do is portraits.

GGM: Not too many people would consider taking up playing the harp as a first thought so what prompted you to learn? Is the harp the only instrument you know how to play?

Miss Jessica: I started harp probably 7 years ago and to be quite honest, I don’t even remember why I started! I do know that several girls that I knew had just started, so I’m sure that helped peak my interest. I have always had a bit of music around me – when I was quite young my Mom taught me how to play the recorder, and then I taught picked up a little guitar, but harp was the first thing I ever took lessons on. Harp has been a very unique opportunity for me as I live close to a major harp teaching center and have been able to use a lot of resources that others do not have and I absolutely love playing it! A few years ago we purchased a piano and since harp and piano are quite similar in lots of ways I have been able to transfer quite a bit from harp, but I would not consider myself a piano player though I do enjoy it.

GGM: Your family travels a lot, where are some of the places have you traveled and what has been your favourite trip so far?

Miss Jessica: Well let’s see, stateside I’ve been to nearly every state west of Tennessee except North Dakota, Washington, New Mexico and Arizona. On our east I’ve never been up in most of the northern New England states, but I’ve been to all the southern and Midwestern states. I’ve never been to Hawaii or Alaska. Outside of the states I’ve been to Brazil, Bolivia and Peru. My favorite place? There are lots of places I like, but all for different reasons and it’s hard comparing them together! I loved Wyoming and Yellowstone for the scenery, Texas just because it’s Texas (did I mention I like western things?) and Brazil for the people (and the food *grin*).

GGM: What does "silverbeam dreams" mean and how did you come up with that?

Miss Jessica: I am an animal person – if we didn’t travel so much I would have a small farm just for the personal enjoyment. My Dad knows this and a couple years ago he told me that I could get some dogs to breed. To say that I was excited is an understatement! I love research and so for the next few weeks and months I carefully studied out exactly what I was looking for as well as the pro’s and con’s of breeding. I settled on a breed – the English Cocker Spaniel. It is a protected breed that is not as popular as its sister the American Cocker Spaniel, so there aren’t as many hereditary breeding problems plus when looking at it from Dad’s point of view, it has a higher profit margin. I found a breeder in my area and we met a few times to answer a few questions I had before I laid out my entire “game” plan before Dad to get his final approval. Toward the end of my research I began seeing it entailed a lot more that what Dad originally thought and I began having doubts as to whether it would work for us. Meanwhile I had gone ahead and picked a kennel name: Silverbeam English Cocker Spaniel . I don’t really know where I got it, but I liked it, so after consulting my sister Rebekah, I settled on it. Finally after about four months of research, I got everything together and explained all that I knew for Dad. Much to my deep disappointment he said what I was afraid of… It wasn’t going to work. So that was the end of that. But Silverbeam still lives on – it’s just a dream right now. Who knows, someday I might actually have a kennel!

GGM: What have you most enjoyed about being online, blogging?

Miss Jessica: I’ve never been very good at corresponding with friends so I love the fact that I can write about life and they can write about theirs and we can keep in contact…. It has also been a wonderful way for me to learn about photography as nearly every photographer has a blog and I can learn from their pictures. The most recent thing though that I have come to realize is that it’s not just a convenient toy to keep up with friends on, but it’s a wonderful tool that I can use to encourage other young ladies on. When I was younger I had this mental thing that I didn’t like writing and wasn’t good at it – well, I’ve learned that it’s not all that bad and that I do enjoy it! The thing I need to be careful with now is not going overboard with the whole thing…

GGM: I love the sweet but firm attitude you have about sharing the Gospel with us and your willingness to give everything to the LORD. Who would you say was always there, throughout your life, encouraging you in the faith?

Miss Jessica: My Dad. I’m sure nearly everybody would give this answer, but it’s the truth! He has always had a vision for family centered worship, dominion oriented masculinity and femininity, biblical entrepreneurialism and a mirage of other things ever since I can remember! He was constantly teaching us even when others were telling him “that’s not the way we do things anymore” and before we had ever heard of Biblical-minded ministries. He has always taken the time to correct and challenge me to better things in life. Most certainly he has made an eternal difference in me and it will affect every generation after me, from my children to great-great-great-grandchildren.

The Hidden “Language” of Passover

Passover is a time for the retelling of the world’s most significant TRUE story. This story and its truths have been retold, as commanded by God, for thousands of years.

This is not just a story for the Jews, but also a story within a story.

This is a story for all of humanity.

This is a story for all of time.

This is a story for all of life.

This story is about hopelessness transformed into victory, darkness into light and bondage into true liberty.

This is a story about the past…

a story about the present…

and a story about the future.

This story contains something like a secret code; a hidden “language”, that in times past was understood only in context of what had happened at that time… deliverance of the Israelite slaves from Egypt.

But as we celebrate Passover, we remember that glorious deliverance in light of another, greater deliverance; the deliverance of the human soul in slavery to sin. This deliverance is not through the death of a lamb, but through the death of The Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the World.


PREPARATION and REFLECTION:

In Luke chapter 20 we read:

“Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed." Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover."

In preparation for Passover we clean our homes and prepare a feast. Traditionally, all the yeast is carefully removed from a home before Passover.. Because yeast symbolizes sin, this is a time for reflection as to the hidden sins in our lives.

“Don’t you know that a little yeast works through the whole dough? Get rid of the old yeast that you may be a new batch without yeast—as you really are. For Messiah, our Passover Lamb has been sacrificed.” (I Cor. 5:7)

We cannot “pay” for our wrongdoing ourselves. Therefore, without payment, we would be separated eternally from God because He is perfectly HOLY. The unblemished white lamb was a blood sacrifice to take the place of the sinner, the PAYMENT for the sins. The blood was applied to the doorpost as a sign to the death angel that this family’s sins were covered; so the death angel would pass over this home.

The Hebrews were instructed to dip hyssop in the blood and strike it against the top and sides of their doorposts. The hyssop was a natural antibiotic and represents cleansing and when the blood was applied as instructed it formed a CROSS upon the door of the home. May we apply the blood of the cross to the doors of our lives as we acknowledge that only the spotless Lamb of God can cleanse us from sin! The work has been DONE. Now it is time to commemorate our freedom in Christ with rejoicing!

CANDLELIGHTING:

As we light the candles, we pray that God’s Holy Spirit will open the eyes of our hearts and teach us His truths. As the Psalmist said,

“The Lord is my light and my salvation.”

The candles are kindled by a woman to remember that although darkness came into this world through the sin of one woman, Eve, Light returned to our world when a woman was given the honor of giving birth to our Redeemer, Jesus Christ who is the Light of the World. May our lives also shine the light of Christ to a people walking in darkness.


FOUR CUPS:

In Exodus 6: 1 we read,

“Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Now you will see what I will do…”

God revealed His plan for deliverance to Moses, in part. Jesus revealed more of His plan to His disciples at the Last Supper before His death. The Passover Seder teaches us about FOUR CUPS. They will each teach us an important truth about God’s plan of redemption.

“… I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians…

I will free you from being slaves…

I will redeem you with an outstretched arm…

I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God.”

Exodus 6:6,7

The Cup of Sanctification: being BROUGHT OUT

The Cup of Deliverance: being SET FREE

The Cup of Redemption: being BOUGHT WITH A PRICE/REDEEMED

The Cup of Praise: REJOICING for our adoption into God’s Family here on Earth and in Eternity!

Not only are we redeemed by God but invited into a relationship with God through Christ. Let these cups teach us more about the gift we have been given… friendship with the Creator of the Universe.

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man, in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit."
Romans 8: 1-4

WASHING:

The gospel of John tells us of another event during the Last Supper, an event that showed us how He, being God, was willing to humble Himself and serve us wholeheartedly by washing the feet of his disciples. As we wash, we remember the humility of our Savior as He cleansed the disciples’ feet and now cleanses the hearts of all who invite Him into their lives.

“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up."
James 4:8-10

THE SEDER PLATE:


In a traditional Passover Seder, the foods on the Seder plate all have special meanings, but special attention is given to the matzah.

THE MATZAH: (Matzah cover on left)

In the gospels we read:

“And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me."

We eat matzah and remember the broken body of Christ, who takes away the sins of the world.

The matzoh are striped, pierced and bruised. Jesus was beaten, pierced, and bruised in our place when He was crucified.

“But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
and by his wounds we are healed.”
Isaiah 53:5

The matzoh is without leaven. The Hebrews made their bread without yeast because they needed to leave in a hurry. We should be quick to leave our life of sin behind!

There are Three Matzo representing The Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The middle matzo (that represents the Son, Jesus Christ) is broken and hidden to represent that He was crucified and buried and hidden in the tomb for three days before He conquered sin and death and was resurrected to redeem us.

OTHER ELEMENTS of the SEDER PLATE:

The roasted egg represents new birth and the promise of eternal life.

The parsley represents new life.

The salt water represents the tears the Hebrew slaves shed and the tears we shed in our bondage to sin.

The parsley dipped in the salt water reminds us that beauty of life is often touched by sorrow.

The horseradish represents the bitterness of slavery to sin.

The charoset represents the mortar the slaves used in building with the bricks they were forced to make. It was hard and terrible work, but there was a sweetness that came when they were delivered by God just as we are delivered by accepting Jesus’ sacrifice for us.

James 1:2-4 & 12
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.”

A traditional Seder plate also contains the shank bone of a lamb. However, we no longer need a lamb to die in our place, because Jesus is the PERFECT Lamb of God that took our sins for all time! When we accept this sacrifice, we belong to Him and are seen by God as cleansed of sin.

Jesus was obedient to the Father, even unto death. We, too, must obey God, our Heavenly Father and obey the authorities that lead us along a Godly path!

ELIJAH:

We set one extra place at our Feast. This place was traditionally set for Elijah. We know Elijah was to announce the coming of Messiah… and John the Baptist filled this role when He prepared a way for the Lord Jesus during His ministry here on earth. Now we look for the SECOND coming of Christ.


Lessons of Passover
Passover teaches us of:

the past… deliverance from sin,

the present....liberty in Christ,

AND the future…

The return of Christ to take believers to Heaven to live eternally with Him!

When we lift our final cup in thanks to our Redeemer and think of the coming time when we will feast with Him in the Kingdom of God as we bless the name of the Lord!

Our joy is complete as we complete our Passover Seder and just as our Salvation is complete and the Law is fulfilled by Jesus Christ, our Messiah.

The traditional conclusion is a wish that we may celebrate Passover next year in Jerusalem… but instead, may we look forward to the time that we will shared this Feast together in The New Jerusalem with the Author and Finisher of our Faith!

“The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let him who hears say, "Come!" Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life…He who testifies to these things says, "Yes, I am coming soon." (from Revelation 22)

Even so, Lord Jesus… Yeshua, our Messiah, Come quickly! Amen.

Growing Together

For many years, we have tried time and time again to grow a vegetable garden. We’ve failed many times, but have finally found the perfect spot and conditions for successfully growing a vegetable garden in the tropics. We’ve found that our vegetable garden needs to be:

1. With plenty of sunlight and some afternoon shade
2. Raised beds
3. Soil that isn’t clay-like but can be packed down firmly
4. Good watering system

Originally this plot was roughly 6m x 3m, but we’ve since doubled it to be 12m x 6m, so it is now a very large veggie garden! We’ve used this plot for the last two years and instead of having the garden in ‘traditional’ long rows, we’ve split the area into square metre beds, leaving one-foot pathways in between. Instead of having maybe six or seven long rows of plants, we have 50 square-metre beds – with footpaths inbetween.

Other things we’ve done over the years:
* In 2007, the year we moved our vegetable garden to where it is now, we had some friends over who were a little bit more experienced with gardens than we were, and we set up the square-meter plots and stomped down the pathways.
* We’ve used both seeds and seedlings, but mostly seedlings, so we didn’t have to worry about growing them from scratch.
* Last year, before we went on holidays, my two brothers thickly mulched the garden with sugarcane hay so as it decomposed, the dirt would become the perfect growing condition for the next growing season.

Growing a veggie garden is heaps of fun, gets you out outside, and is economical. There are so many different plants to try – why not give it a go? It doesn’t have to be 12m x 6m plots; I once read about growing herbs in old sneakers! With the spice of creativity, imagination and diligence, you will be eating your own veggies in no time!

Teach A Child to Save Day

My parents have taught me that every good and perfect gift is from God and belongs to God. That includes our body, money, time, talents, etc. We are to be wise stewards of the assets we have been given. We should use them for the furtherance of God’s kingdom and for His glory. In order to have money to give to missions and help the poor, we must live frugally. Quite frankly, living extravagantly while millions have never heard the Gospel and are starving to death is absolutely wrong. We are commanded to give generously, not to gratify ourselves lavishly.

Our tithes and offerings should always come first. The money that is left over is for us to use wisely. Teaching children to save is a valuable lesson which will serve them well for their entire lives. It also causes them to learn patience and self-control. On the other hand, people who embrace instant gratification will most likely end up overwhelmed by credit card debt and discontentment.
Here are some things I have learned:

1. Seek the Lord’s will in prayer before making a purchase.
2. Don’t buy something that you want immediately. Wait awhile. Oftentimes, you will realize it is not that important and save your money for a wiser purchase.
3. Do not spend more than you have.
4. Wait for sales. Try not to buy anything at its regular price.
5. Shop at places such as Goodwill and other thrift stores.

Garage sales are also great places to get things for less money. Finally, let us never forget that all of our time, talents, and treasures are from the Lord and we have been given the responsibility to be wise savers and spenders of them all.

"Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law." Romans 13:8

Unless

The Rainbow

"I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth." Genesis 9:13

The rainbow is known world-wide but, besides the flood, what does it have to do with the Bible? Well, I found this online and decided to share it with y'all.

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. Violet is the first color in light. This was the color of the robe they put on Christ before they crucified him. The violet robe meant royalty so it signified king of the Jews.

Violet light measures 700 angstroms. (Angstroms is units used to measure light waves) The number 7 is associated with God throughout the Bible. Violet has the high frequency of all the seven colors of light.

The next color in the spectrum is DARK BLUE

1^st Day Gen:1:2 And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

And God said, Let there be light.

The next color in the spectrum is light BLUE

As we look to the Heavens we see that it appears light blue

The children of Israel spent 40 years in the desert.)

So God created man in his own image;in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and SUBDUE it;

And have DOMINION over the fish of the sea, and the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

God called him ADAM, (which means RED man) Adam was given DOMINION

Revelation 4:3 And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. Revelation 10:1 And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire: I hope you enjoyed learning about this. Let's Go Fly A Kite

"Let's go fly a kite, up to the highest heights, let's go fly a kite and send it soaring!"

Don't we all love to fly kites?!? It is so fun watching a dragon an airplane or even just a normal kite soaring through the air! This month is National Kite flying month and I would like to share with you the history of the kite.

No one really knows the exact date and origin of the kite,but some people believe that they were flown in China more than two thousand years ago. For thousands of years kites have explored the heavens of many nations of the world. They have been used for pastimes and amusements for young and old alike. Many people enjoyed them and many people still do today. Kite flying is a cultural hobby and enjoyed in many communities all over the world.

Here are some tips for kite flying:

1. Make sure that it is a windy day. If there is a flag near by look at it and if it is gently flapping then it is a good day for kite flying, but if it is moving rapidly then I suggest that you not fly your kite that day.
2.If you want to fly a kite, make sure there are no buildings, trees, or power lines nearby.
3. Do not fly it in a thunderstorm or when it is raining.
4. The best place to fly your kite, is in a large open open field.

Another good point is, that before you put your kite in the air, make sure there aren't any holes or other tripping hazards ahead of you. That way when you start to run and have your kite take off you won't trip over anything.

The Culture of Cults and Cult-Like Behaviour

In April of 1993 America witnessed a battle between Law Enforcement and the Davidian Branch Compound while innocent, but indoctrinated, women and children shook with fear over the battle that was raging over two distinctively different goals. David Koresh’s goal was to resist Law Enforcement under his belief that he was the Messiah and was willing to die for his ‘faith’. He also trained his captives to die for their ‘faith’ as well. Although Koresh indoctrinated his followers with his beliefs and ordered them to fire against the officers, he failed to teach them that Jesus himself said in

Matthew 22:21, “They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.”

Romans 13:1-3, "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: "

Many times when someone is new to a religious organization they are innocently ignorant of the philosophies being taught. It is important to search the scriptures and know for yourself what the Lord has taught. Even the noble men of Paul’s time were diligent in knowing what the Bible really said in

Acts 17:11, “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”

April is also the month in which Virginia Tech and Columbine both suffered from a gun battle that ended with many lives lost. Since the beginning of time Satan has had his talons deep into the lives of humans over his rage against God. His focus seems to have always been parents and young people, since the time of Cain and Abel, and their parents. If that ol’ enemy can’t get the parents to falter, he will seek the children as his victims. He is always at work against young people, and it is evident when we look at the world around us. When young people and their families won’t succumb to the world’s enticements the enemy uses religion to get them entangled in his plans so they will be distracted from the Lord Jesus Christ. He does this through the manipulation of false religions, also known as cults.

Cults are not only religious in nature, they also are found in a variety of other avenues. You can find cults within music, businesses, organizations, etc. The word cult comes from the word culture, an integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends upon the capacity for symbolic thought and social learning. It is a set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution, organization or group, yet in today’s society we see cults as dangerous breeding grounds intended for harm. Many times people who are involved in a cult are naïve to what is at the root of their group.

Some cults result in physical harm or death of themselves by suicide or by attacking others. Most cults result in isolation from family members and friends, and we must be cautious of modern cults that contain the Christian label.

A cult is a group or person who leads many people in a direction that is not honoring to a parent’s authority as well as the Lord Jesus Christ. One such cult that is not of a religious nature is that of musicians. When a young person has been hooked into a music group that would cause them to disobey their parents just to listen to their music or attend their concerts, it is considered a cult. Many parents remember when The Beatles craze hit American shores. Scores of teenagers were rebelling against their parental authority when they disobeyed their parents to loyally followed their group, began using drugs, and resisted Law Enforcement when they tried to control the crowds.

Another cult that is not of a religious nature is that of fantasy and science fiction. As early as the 1960’s people began testifying of alien abductions, just a few short years after the first Alien film, ’20 Million Miles to Earth’. An interesting fact to ponder is the fact that these testimonies of alien abductions describe them as being lizard-like in appearance and performing demonic ‘investigations’ of human sexual organs. Aliens became a hit in American culture and people created organized groups that followed the stars and NASA explorations diligently. When Steven Spielberg’s film ‘Close Encounters of The Third Kind’ hit the theaters, people saw a glimpse of what those testimonies must have been like. Those who were enticed to believe this science fiction phenomena as being real became consumed with seeking extra-terrestrial life outside of Earth. In doing so they became a cult, who ignorantly followed a dangerous occultic practice known among early Egyptians.

Many Christians are unaware of a cult that is an organized group which is portrayed as one that assists the community around them. This cult is known as Freemasonry, or The Masons. They appear to be a local group of men who meet weekly or monthly for fellowship and community efforts to help their neighbor. To most people they seem to be ‘Christian’ in nature as they allow their members to ‘pray’ in the meetings to their ‘God’. Women are not allowed in their lodge, nor are any atheists. They created a group that women can participate in called The Rainbow Girls and Job’s Daughters. They also created The Shriner’s Hospital that helps millions of handicapped children throughout our world. Just as with most cults, they seem to be harmless groups that claim to have a desire to ‘help their fellow man’. Upon further investigation of this cult The Masons, as with many others, you will find a deep-rooted demonic force that intends to destroy the person’s faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

There will be many who do not believe what I am writing in this article, yet you owe it to yourself and your families to know what you believe and why you believe it. Some of the most popular, well known, and widely accepted cults are within churches that use mind control to bring their followers into mental and emotional bondage. It becomes so powerful that the followers lose the ability to think for themselves. This kind of mind control involves a severe social influence conditioning program which may include:

• an exclusive system of authoritarian control,
  
• manipulation,
  
• a program of punishment and rewards,
  
• information control,
  
• fraud, and
  
• coercion.
  

Depending on the number and intensity of undue influential tactics, and a person's own naivety, one may experience:

• a false personality change and
  
• marked mental or emotional weakness,
  
• compliance, and
  
• servitude.
  

Cult-like leaders will keep a person:

• so busy that they don’t have time for life outside of the cult.
  
• Many times the leader or cult group will drive a wedge between the family unit by coercing them into separate activities and
  
• drain them of energy so they are too tired to think about what is happening to them.

Here is a list of things to keep in mind in regards to religious cults:

• Breaking down a person's mind by mental abuse.
• Putting a simple minded person in leadership positions. These people will blindly obey and follow their leader over what anyone else says and will demand loyalty even when the leader is wrong.
• Control the person's time and environment.
• No outside recreation without the group.
• They create a powerlessness in people.
• As the group attacks the person's worldview, it causes the person distress and inner confusion; yet they are not allowed to speak about this confusion or object to it - leadership suppresses questions and counters resistance.
• Mind control increases as the people in the group are kept busier than usual in order to keep them under their control and too tired to think clearly.
• Old healthy life patterns are not accepted and must suppress them.
• Members get positive feedback for conforming to the group's beliefs and behaviors and negative feedback for old beliefs and behavior.
• Good behavior, demonstrating an understanding and acceptance of the group's beliefs, and compliance are rewarded while questioning, expressing doubts or criticizing are met with disapproval, redress and possible rejection. If one expresses a question, he or she is made to feel that there is something inherently disordered about them to be questioning.
• The only feedback members get is from the group; they become totally dependent upon the rewards given by those who control the environment. Striving to perform in order to get these rewards or positive feedback shows the dependency the person has been created to expect. When the rewards cease to be given, the person becomes hurt, confused, or disgruntled.
• Put forth a closed system of logic and an authoritarian structure that allows no feedback and refuses to be corrected except by leadership approval or executive order.
• Members are not allowed to question their leaders.The follower is treated as if they are in defiance and the leadership is not to be questioned and trusted to make the right decision. If their judgment is questioned the follower is either ignored, rebuked, or quieted through various forms of manipulation or blackmail. Sometimes their attention is redirected into another direction such as a new special form of leadership created for them in order to keep them busy.
• Flattery is used to puff up the follower in order to make them feel accepted and valued. Most times the new, simple minded, or those who are catching on to what is happening are the most likely to become flattered. Psalm 12:3, "The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things:" and 1 Thessalonians 2:5, "For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness:"
• Spying on other members and asking for reports on their lives.
• Manipulation of a followers emotions. Downplaying their feelings as unimportant or in error.
  
• Faults are never the leaders fault.
• Leadership is backed even when in the wrong and often times covered up. When a follower catches on and tries to question or expose the wrong doing the leader will often rebuke the follower of being critical or defying leadership.
• Emphasizing irrational fears about ever leaving the group or even questioning the leader’s authority. The person under mind control cannot visualize a positive, fulfilled future without being in the group. Such as telling testimonies of people who left and suffered from death or illness and that is told to be their punishment or consequences.
• Defying unwritten rules are considered rebellious and often rebuke is given to the follower.
• Instant friendships. True friendships develop over time. Flattery such as "my dear friend" and they really don't know each other very well at all.
• A cult leader will try to persuade you to reduce or eliminate altogether outside friendships and even family.
• Any information that could lead followers to the clear understanding that their teaching is wrong is destroyed or followers are told that to read it is considered critical and punishable by authority through public character assassination.
• Keeping the members so busy that they don't have time to do anything other than support their groups cause. This kind of busyness causes families to be divided and not able to have adequate time together at home.
• Followers are sometimes reprimanded for not participating in every meeting or activity or told their loyalty is being questioned.
• Leaders often times discourage parents from believing what their children report to them.
• Followers are told to always side with leadership even if they are wrong.

Some things to keep in mind are:

1. It's important for a follower to be able to have the freedom to research about the group without the group leading their research.
2. If the follower has been told to refrain from researching about them, then you may want to go ahead and do so.
3. An honest group will not be opposed to a follower reading critical information about them.
4. If the group has nothing to hide then they will not mind you seeking outside information.
5. There is no perfect group, yet anything negative a former member may say should be willingly discussed by your leader. If the situation is covered up or ignored then be cautious in dealing with this group.
6. A real honest leader will openly discuss any concerns you have about the group with humility. They will have nothing to fear by you asking.

So how can you protect yourself from becoming involved in a cult?

• Know the Bible.
• Question and compare the teaching to the Scriptures.
• Cults who claim to believe in the Bible, but use alternative sources for doctrinal teaching are dangerous. Be sure all the teaching and practices are in agreement with the Scriptures.
• Keep in mind that although Jesus taught that we are to abstain from all appearance of evil, we are to share the gospel, even with your own family. He never said to isolate yourself from family members who don't believe the same as you.
• If you believe you are in a cult and are just realizing it, there is help for you.

2 Peter 2:1-3, “ 1But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. 2And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. 3And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.”
Galatians 1:6-9, “ 6I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.”
John 14:6, “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

The Lord Jesus Christ would not want you to participate in a cult. His expressed desire as put forth in scripture is to freely choose Him as your Saviour. What kind of relationship would he have with you if you felt forced to love him? Proverbs 8:17, “I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.”

The Lord Jesus wants us to live in freedom. 2 Corinthians 3:17, "Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. " Galatians 5:1, "Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage."

He is interested in your willing desire to help others come to know him. 2 Peter 3:9, “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

God doesn’t want you to give begrudgingly through coercion. 2 Corinthians 9:7, “Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.”

The Lord Jesus wants you to be free from the cult. 2 Corinthians 6:17, “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.”

Your best defense in escaping a cult is to find help. Breaking free from mind control is not an easy task all on your own. Some people have broken free from that bondage by weaning themselves away from the group a little at a time, while some seek outside help, break free immediately, and move away. Whatever the case may be with you, firm support is needed as is a strong relationship with the Lord and a working knowledge of the scriptures. If you feel your knowledge of the scriptures is not strong, find someone who is that is able to help you.

How to Build Faith

How do you speak to a person about trusting in the Lord if they have no faith? It takes faith to believe in the Lord and it takes faith to please the Lord. Sometimes it may seem like people won't listen to the plan of salvation, so how can you help build their faith?

Romans 10:17, "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."

In order to build faith we must hear the Word of God. We must have a foundation in which we build upon. If we attempt to toss out a few verses to someone who has no faith their steps to salvation may not be very sturdy. A good way to help build someone's faith is to speak the very Word of God to them in your conversations. This is why memorizing God's Word is so crucial if you have a desire to lead souls to Christ. Some verses that I like to keep fresh in my mind for this purpose are:

John 1:1, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

Genesis 1:1, "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."

1 John 5:7, "For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one."

Romans 10:13, "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."

Luke 5:32, "I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

There are so many good verses to memorize, all of them are. Yet when you acquaint yourself with the necessary verses that coincide with the plan of salvation you'll have plenty of spiritual ammunition to quote that will build their faith in God's Word. There's no need to remember where it is found in the Bible, the numbers of chapters and verses were not inspired by God, just the words.

Here is a challenge for you. Take the following verses, which are the most popular used verses when leading a lost soul to Christ, and find 2-3 more verses that confirm the truths told in those verses and memorize them. We would love to know which verses you chose so please feel free to post below in the comment section which verses you chose.

Romans 3:10 (KJV) “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one.”

Romans 3:23 (KJV) For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Romans 6:23 (KJV) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 10:9 (KJV) “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Remote Controll: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

The wonderful book by John Boyne, 'The Boy in the Striped Pajamas', has finally made it's way onto the big screen. This is a fictional book that takes place during WWII. It is not a true story, but it's based on the truth of the Holocaust. I would recommend the movie to mature 13 years old and up. The story is about two little boys who live in opposite realities.

Nine-year-old Bruno lives a wealthy lifestyle in Pre-war Germany along with his mother, elder sister, and army Commandant father. He plays with his friends all of the time and loves it there in Berlin, but things change when the family re-locates to the countryside where his father is assigned to commandeer a prison camp. Upon arrival, Bruno is homesick. His new home is much smaller, full of soldiers and there is no-one to play with. Besides, he is forbidden to explore. A few days later, Bruno befriends Shmuel, a Jew who is strangely dressed in striped pajamas and lives behind an electrified fence! Bruno will soon find out that he is not permitted to befriend his new friend, because of his race, and that the neighboring yard is actually a prison camp for Jews awaiting extermination.

This movie has many morals to it. Some are that you should always know where your children are, who they are with and what they are doing. It is not overprotective, it's smart. This movie makes me love homeschooling even more because my parents do have control over what I'm learning. It is so much safer that way. When you notice changes taking place in your child's life that is out of character, question it! Our family agreed that watching this film made us realize many dangers taking place right here in America that we must be aware of. We urge you to view this film. Healthy Steps: Allergies

*Aaaaaaaa-choooooo!* Excuse me, it's allergy season and I thought it would be a good idea to talk about sinus health in this Healthy Steps. To start off, here are some ideas for prevention and/or fixer uppers.

Chamomile Tea is considered as a natural anti-histamine. This is very popular drink throughout the world. Having one or two cups, sweetened with your local honey, in the day gives you immunity towards the allergens. Keep in mind that you should not consume it if allergic to ragweed.

Fresh garlic is one of the best immunity builders against any type of the allergens. Garlic has proven its efficacy as decongestant and hence also used in many different types of coughs and colds. Try to have fresh garlic rather than going for powdered or dried or readymade paste. *Remember that garlic may worsen the case if you have severe acid-reflux. You need to keep the original raw garlic juice intact. It is a natural anti-biotic.

Simple and plain local honey will work. This gives fight towards the allergens and also helps you become resistant to certain pollens. Keep in mind that all the beneficial properties are lost once the honey is cooked.You can most likely find local honey at a Farmer's Market near you.

Peppermint tea is used to help relieve congestion from the nose and the respiratory tract. On the other hand, in summer, it is refreshing when icy and helps in preventing coughs and sinus problems related to the allergy.

Ginger is sufficient enough to cover up all the causative factors to allergies. This not only builds immunity but also reduces the over secretion of histamine from the body which is most uncomfortable factor during allergy attacks.

Green tea or the common table tea has natural capacity to block the over secretion of histamine. You can have one to two cups a day with honey. Instead of the green tea, you can replace that by having black tea. It is not reported as effective as green tea, but sometimes this can be used as substitute.(Side note: drinking green tea may also help you lose weight
;)

Thyme is wonderful for congestion. This tea is also used for cough, stuffy nose and sinus problems. You can prepare the tea using one teaspoon of the dried herb for each cup of water. The precaution includes the dosage should not exceed more than one cup a day.

Dilute vinegar by adding a little water and apply it with a cotton ball on the bug-bites. This prevents the allergic reaction towards the toxins secreted in a bite. You can also put some vinegar in your bath-tub.

Some have taken a dose of 400 mg of Vitamin E regularly at least for 3-4 weeks. This is known to possesses anti-allergic property.

Go for half cup of the vegetable or fruit juice or take simple plain water and add about 5 drops of castor oil. This drink should be taken on empty stomach in the morning.

Limejuice is most popular remedy for allergies. Lukewarm water is mixed with one teaspoon of honey and ½ tsp of limejuice is taken on regular basis early in the morning. This should be continued for couple of months. Taking this builds immunity towards the allergic conditions. Be careful if you are one of those people who are allergic to citrus fruits.

Oatmeal: If your allergies give you hives, oatmeal can be really useful. Pour one cup of boiling water over one tablespoon oatmeal. Let it steep for thirty minutes. Strain it, and then apply the liquid on your hives with a cotton ball. This also works to relive bug bites. Refrigerate the solution and use it in a few days. You can also make this in larger amounts and put it in your bathwater (about four cups of water and four tablespoons of oatmeal).

Apple cider vinegar: Many grandmothers used to put apple cider vinegar on any bug bites or hives to cut down on the itching. Just dilute the vinegar down with a little water and apply it with a cotton ball.
