Chrissa Stands Strong: Review

I am not usually one to make a full 100% support of a film and even when I am, I will let you know what concerns I have for it as well. First and foremost Chrissa, a ten year old girl, attends a public school and the topic of homeschooling does come up, although is not pursued which is a disappointment. I feel it would be beneficial for American Girl to incorporate a homeschool girl into their cast of characters and dolls for the 21st Century.

I believe that 21st Century homeschool girls do face challenges for their family's decision to home educate and I feel it would behoove AG to look into another American Girl who lives the homeschooling lifestyle.

Now although Chrissa goes to public school, I feel her experiences with the girls in her school is a socially educational study, because I have seen plenty of the same struggles within many different girl groups, including among adults in most 'churches'. I don't mean that as a knock against people, but the study of group dynamics crosses many social circles.

Years ago I read a book that covers this very topic and found there are many books and websites available for resources to parents and girls about how to deal with the drama that surrounds that passage of life. Keywords for adults for searching are: school bullies, mean girls, queen bees, teen group dynamics, Rosalind Wiseman.

In Chrissa Stands Strong we see a short story about a girl who moves to a new town and struggles with making new friends. The popular girls, the Mean Bees, in school seems to be bold and sure of themselves, but their subtle manipulation puts Chrissa in a paralyzed state of confusion.

A word of caution about this film; the Mean Bees are mean, really mean. I Gasped many times during this movie and was even moved to tears at times. I grew up in a public school and my girls in a Christian School and I can tell you from experience that Mean Bees from all over the world know how to perfect their craft. This is what is so startling to so many parents. This craftiness by Mean Bees is dangerous and must be dealt with.

Chrissa needs to make a decision about whether or not to tattle on these girls, or is it called standing up for yourself? No one wants to be labeled a tattle tale. I believe every young girl should be counseled by their parents on exactly how to handle situations like this. By the time you reach the conclusion of this film, take some time to discuss the story with your children. This AG film just barely touches the hem of the garment of how dangerous this issue is today.

If you decide to see this film, you may want to pause it after each scene and discuss the trials Chrissa is facing.

Some questions to consider:

How would you feel if..... happened to you?
How would you make a friend in a new situation?
What would you do if you saw girls treat others like that?
Would you know what to say?
Are you afraid of telling sometimes?
What kind of fears do you think Chrissa had in coming forward for help?
How much worse do you think it could get if she never told anyone?

This review is meant simply to give you some basic information about the film and the content thereof. If you are sensitive about bathing suits, Chrissa is on a swim team, but these girls are far too young to show any neckline issues. There is no bad language or romance involved. This story is just one of many reasons why our family chooses to homeschool. Keep in mind that this kind of bullying is not just in social circles in real life, but in virtual life as well. Cyber bullying is included in this film and should be researched in depth by any parent who allows their child to be a part of social network groups, message board forums, and blogging.

Sunrise Earth

My family and I have been watching a television program for a while now and I just HAVE to share it with you. It's called Sunrise Earth. Sunrise Earth is a feed of the many different sunrises from around the world. You never know where you may 'travel' next. From the Vermont balloon races to Palo Verde National Park in Costa Rica. God's creation is so beautiful and this program allows us to see it. For those of you who may not have cable, you can purchase the different sunrises on DVD here. Here are some screen shots from some episodes. It's so refreshing to hear the sounds of nature in the morning time. I like to read the Psalms that talk about God's creation, such as Psalm 104 and 136.

Remote Control

The first reported remote control 'attempt' was in 1950. The Zenith Radio Corporation created the very first television remote control and dubbed it "Lazy Bone." The Lazy Bone could turn a television on and off, and change channels, but it was not a wireless remote control. The Lazy Bone remote control was attached to the television by a big bulky cable. Reports soon arised that the consumers complained that it caused frequent tripping.

Zenith engineer, Eugene Polley created the "Flash-matic" the first wireless TV remote in 1955. The Flash-matic worked by four light censers, one in each corner of the screen. The viewer used a special flashlight to make the functions work . But, the Flash-matic had problems working well on sunny days, when the sunlight sometimes changed channels at random.

The improved "Zenith Space Command" remote control went into commercial production in 1956. Zenith engineer, Doctor Robert Adler designed the Space Command based on ultrasonics. The Space Command transmitter used no batteries. Two different types of reports were sent in on this one. Number one, someone was playing a toy xylophone and it changed the channel. Number two, it was reported that dogs and young girls somehow heard the high frequencies and it hurt they're ears.

Obviously remotes have come a long way. They now make remote controls for many different things. From automatic curtain movers, to automatic car starters. The invention of the remote has definitely helped man on it's ultimate quest for laziness! ;) Of course, if God had not invented the thumb it would be much more difficult to control the remote. You can even get a remote for those who are losing their eye sight. They have much bigger buttons and are much easier to read.

Remote Controll: Twilight

WARNING: This article, while written from a Biblical perspective, contains graphic information about subjects that are not suitable for everyone in our audience. Please get your parent's permission before reading further.

I have heard a whole lot of talk about Twilight. I see this book/movie paraphernalia everywhere right now and I decided to do a little researching. I found out that it's a lot more than what it's talked about. Some people might say that they think it's just a romance story. This is what I found. Teenage girl falls in 'love' with a hundred and something year old vampire. Well, let's start out with a few definitions.

*Love- To have benevolence or good will for.

*Vampire-In mythology, an imaginary demon, which was fabled to suck the blood of persons during the night.

Now, look at those two definitions and tell me if they look like they could go together. I don't think so. Vampires are

a supernatural being. Even though in today's culture, we are familiar with the vampire ideology, there's a biblical identity that Christians should see right off. If vampires do exist, the translation of 'vampire' for Christians is 'demon'.

This movie goes right along with the culture today. It's called Gothic. Why do people like black, blood, death, and chains so much?

Why is black so cool? The Bible says in Genesis 1:2-4 "²And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. ³And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. ⁴And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness."


God didn't want everything to be dark, so he created light. He also divided the light from the darkness. The Bible says in 2 Cor. 6:14 "...for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?" Why would we want to have communion with darkness when it is associated with unrighteousness? In the definition of vampire it says 'during the night'. In the dark. Many horrible things happen in the night.

It says in James 1:17 "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning." God is called 'the Father of lights'. If you feel that you have spent to much time in the dark, come to the light. Come to the Father of lights. He will protect you.

My next question was: "Why is blood so cool?"

Why is it that so many girls feel like they need to cut themselves? When I thought about this, it brought someone to mind. The maniac of Gadara. He was possessed with a legion of demons. The Bible says in Mark 5:5 "And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones." I wonder if he had some emotional problems with, maybe, depression or self punishment of guilt. Maybe the demons thought he was easy prey. He might have already had some problems that the demons wanted to prey on. God loves us and Satan hates us. Since Satan can't hurt God, he sometimes hurts us to get to God. God promised us in 1 Kings 8:57 "The LORD our God be with us, as he was with our fathers: let him not leave us, nor forsake us:" Also in John 14:18, it says "I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you." God wants to comfort us and be with us, all we have to do is obey his commandments and ask.

God loves us, I said that above. He said he would comfort us, I said that too. He does not want us to be in isolation. Sometimes, isolation can hurt us. Broken hearts lead to solitude. Look at the above verse again "And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs..." He wanted to be alone. Is there a hidden hurt in your life that drives you to want to be alone? You are never alone with Jesus. If you have problems with isolation or cutting, please seek spiritual guidance. God would not want harm to come to you.

He was in the mountains and the tombs. We see by 'tombs' that this man had a fascination with death. Part of this 'gothic culture' is death. Isn't that what a vampire is? It's someone who has, in a sense, died.
Here it is speaking about Jesus when it says in Hebrews 2:14 "Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;"
Right here in this verse it says that the devil has power of death, but Jesus has the power over death. Therefore, Jesus has power over the devil. If you have developed a fascination with death, Jesus can help you over come that.

"crying, and cutting himself with stones." I don't think that he was crying just because it hurt physically. He probably was going through some serious emotional pain as well. When Jesus came, he helped this man. Jesus can help you too.

Why does today's culture like chains so much? The Bible says in Mark 5:3-4 (speaking of the maniac) "Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: 4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him. Does living in the Gothic life style have anything to do with your spiritual walk? Yes, it does. It says in Mark 5:6 "But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him," We see here that not only physically was Jesus afar off, but because of the legion of devils, he was spiritually far away. If you have ever been obsessed with the Gothic lifestyle were you seriously studying your Bible during that time? Mark 5:13 "And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea." I see two things here. One is that the demons did not 'love' this man. As books like 'Twilight' project, the vampire, demon, "loved" this girl. I don't know if the demons told this man that they wanted to help him or that they loved him. But I know, from what happened, that they didn't, because they wanted to go into a herd of swine. They had about as much respect for him as they did for the pigs. Remember that when they entered the swine they ran over the cliff to their death.

>The second thing I see here is that there were 2,000 demons in this one man. When did all this start with him? Before the demons he had friends, we see that in verse 19 "...Go home to thy friends , and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee." It appears that when the demons came into his life, his friends left.

Is this what we want occupying our hearts and minds, even in a fantasy world? Romantic obsession with a demonic being? The Bible says in Phil. 2:5 " Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:"

The idea of a vampire sucking your blood really should concern us. I believe there are spiritual issues involved. Vampires take your blood, and drain you of your life, they don't give their life to save your soul. Jesus gave his life blood for us on the cross, but he didn't ask for ours in return! Here we are with books that focus almost entirely on the heroine's blood. How awful! No fantasy should twist such an infatuation into "love". This sounds a lot more like the invitation to a demonic presence.

I know what many might say- "It's only a story, it's only fantasy." But, have you ever seen teen girls once they become fascinated, even on a fictional character? It does have an effect on them. Today we are being pushed with Harry Potter when we're twelve and vampires when we're fifteen. These interests do shape ideas of the kind of relationship we will seek. We are setting ourselves up to be, at the very least, disappointed with the reality of an ordinary but nice non-vampire-ish guy. At worst, we may tolerate abuse as the normal part of a really “passionate” relationship. I would not want to have a relationship with someone when I am worried if I am going to live through the night. I do not know what was running through the fictional girl's head about this demon wanting to kill her in the night, but I would not feel safe. I would run to my parents and to Jesus as fast as I could for protection.

As it says above, "It's only a story, it's only fantasy." Fantasy has a spiritual aspect to it, which even Christians dismiss in this media time. Wicked, Twilight, Phantom of the Opera, and Lord of the Rings just to name a few. Spending lots of time fascinated with romance involving demons is not becoming for the Bride of Christ preparing for her Bridegroom's return.

We pray your desire to know Christ and have a deep covenantal relationship with Hm will begin to grow and that you will find the peace that only He can bring.

Remote Controll: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

The wonderful book by John Boyne, 'The Boy in the Striped Pajamas', has finally made it's way onto the big screen. This is a fictional book that takes place during WWII. It is not a true story, but it's based on the truth of the Holocaust. I would recommend the movie to mature 13 years old and up. The story is about two little boys who live in opposite realities.

Nine-year-old Bruno lives a wealthy lifestyle in Pre-war Germany along with his mother, elder sister, and army Commandant father. He plays with his friends all of the time and loves it there in Berlin, but things change when the family re-locates to the countryside where his father is assigned to commandeer a prison camp. Upon arrival, Bruno is homesick. His new home is much smaller, full of soldiers and there is no-one to play with. Besides, he is forbidden to explore. A few days later, Bruno befriends Shmuel, a Jew who is strangely dressed in striped pajamas and lives behind an electrified fence! Bruno will soon find out that he is not permitted to befriend his new friend, because of his race, and that the neighboring yard is actually a prison camp for Jews awaiting extermination.

This movie has many morals to it. Some are that you should always know where your children are, who they are with and what they are doing. It is not overprotective, it's smart. This movie makes me love homeschooling even more because my parents do have control over what I'm learning. It is so much safer that way. When you notice changes taking place in your child's life that is out of character, question it! Our family agreed that watching this film made us realize many dangers taking place right here in America that we must be aware of. We urge you to view this film. Remote Controll: Danger Lurking at The Store

I have written about different things in the past, but I think that I should write about the angers of the movie store.

Although there is fun in going to rent a movie for the family, I have been sick over some of the things that I have seen in the movie store. I really dislike ever going into one. 'Adult' content is openly displayed, horror movie posters are on the walls and awful video games about killing and
immorality are being played.

Every time I end up going to a movie store, I feel like there's darkness all around me and I have to look at the carpet to avoid seeing anything that I shouldn't. As Christians, we should be a light in this dark world.

The Bible says in Psalm 101:3 "I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes:
I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me."

If a man walks into the movie store and sees a woman on the cover of a movie posing in a sensual way, what do you think is in his mind?

Matthew 5:28 "But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart."

If God has not given us the spirit of fear, who do you think has? Why would you want to watch a movie or look at something that will cause you to have fear?

II Timothy 1:7 "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."

Please, fellow Christians, we need to think twice before we walk into a movie store. We could call ahead and have them hold the movie at the front desk and wait for you so you don't have to walk through the store. Consider trying Netflix instead and parents can make the selection without exposing children to what is at their eye level in the movie stores. Maybe you could just stop renting movies all together or borrow one from a trusted friend. We need to be a godly example of Christian ladies and beholding such things brings a snare to our souls.

Remote ConTroll: Fireproof the Movie & The Love Dare

Most of us have either already seen Fireproof or were waiting for the public release of the DVD. Fireproof the Movie hit the shelves with a bang last week. I was honored to have the opportunity to interview Miss Erin Bethea at AGMinistries.org before the movie was released. My husband and I saw the film while it was in our town and I was not prepared for the emotions that came forth while watching this inspiring film on marriage.

Now that Fireproof is available for everyone to see in the comfort of their own homes, I highly recommend a box of tissue to be by your side. Kirk Cameron gives an awesome performance as the fire chief husband driven to achieve respect from his wife. Although the film shows the tension between the husband and wife, you won't hear any profanity, nor any physical violence in their relationship. Convincing emotions run high between this couple and may be best suited for mature audiences due to the nature of the main rift in their relationship. As a parent I recommend you view the film before allowing your children to see it. We have decided to allow our oldest daughter to see the film, but are still praying about whether or not to allow the second oldest to see it.

Fireproof is not without comedy relief, as the firefighters learn a valuable lesson in pride. Their Chief teaches them valuable lessons during their work days, while learning lessons himself on life and marriage from a wise co-worker. Firefighting actions scenes bring a sense of teamwork to the film as they work hard to save lives, while his good friend teaches him the correlation between their job and marriage.

The lives of Caleb and Katherine Holt will teach you about the sanctity of marriage and the battle we face to save the next generation from the grips of the enemy's tactics to destroy what God has created for us. Fireproof's filmmakers have created valuable resources created to help guide you through the film and a journey back to the marriage God intended for us all to have.

My husband and I are currently reviewing The Love Dare and have a leather-like bound copy to give away to one lucky reader. Remote ConTroll: The Season's Shows

Wow, the cultural Christmas season is upon us and I see new holiday movies everywhere. But, they are not all family friendly. My, how movies have changed over the years! There is a definite difference between shows like 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' and 'A Christmas Story'. If Christmas is 'supposed to be' about the Messiah's birth, then why do we allow such awful humor and profane language in movies about it?

I enjoy watching 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' because when all of the kids and the animals get caught up in the material of the season, with the lights and the tree and everything, Linus sets everyone straight on the real meaning of Christ's birth. It is about the Lord and his birth in the stable manger with all of the animals and the angels.

We want to be careful not to fill our family's minds with materialism. We want to be sure that they know what the true meaning of Christ's birth really is. This year our family cleaned out our 'Christmas' films. We are taking steps to take out parts of this world's 'culture' of Christmas.

I would suggest you try 'The Nativity Story'. Although there are some parts I don't agree with scripturally, it is a nice film that brings honor to the birth of Christ rather than to stockings being hung by the chimney for ol' Saint Nick. Please be sure that the simplicity and godliness of the birth of Christ is upheld.

Video Games

Well, this time I am writing about video games. The other day I was in a store with my family and I saw some of the scariest images I have ever seen on some of those games. Movies and music get much of the blame when it comes to violence such as the Columbine shooting, but video games are also sometimes involved.

You may ask what video games have to do with violence in the real world. Well, a lot. We are naturally born to want to win. If a video game relates violence with winning, it's no wonder kids think that in order to win in the world, you have to have a little violence. Which is not true.

The Bible says in Psalm 101:3 "I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me."

If it is violent and scary, I don't think that it is of the Lord. Which means that it is of the devil, it is wickedness. God wants us to "abstain from all appearances of evil". Why would we want to seem wicked when we are a child of the King? It is not that we WANT to be wicked, but nonetheless, it is still wicked. Let' s be a shining example to those in the world. Let's show others that we are set apart and something is different about us. That something is God.

There is so much more that you could be doing with your time. Clean up, learn something new, share the gospel, write something for Him, or go read The Good Book.

Mother-Daughter Movie Night

Since this month is Mother's Day month, I have decided to write an article about a nice movie that you could watch with your mother. "Little Women" is one of the cutest movies that I have ever seen. I have watched the older version and the newer version. Both are very cute movies. You do not have to worry about profanity, because ladies did not use profanity back then.

**SPOILER WARNING** If you have not seen the movie or read the book and do not want it spoiled, do not read on.

What I enjoyed about the newer movie is that there is more of a distinct line between the sisters. They all have there own distinct identities. Also, it is easier to tell what the characters are thinking because they portrayed their emotions better. This movie was made in 1994. A few of the actresses in the movie are: Winona Ryder, Kirsten Dunst and Susan Sarandon.

What I liked about both movies was the fact that they were both pretty close to the book. The mother daughter relationship in this story is so strong. They constantly look out for each other.

What I liked about the older movie is the fact that it is so innocent. Even though Jo and Laurie are friends, there is a certain amount boy-girl respect. This movie was made in 1933. A few of the actresses in this movie are: Katharine Hepburn, Frances Dee and Jean Parker.

Either one of these movies are a great mother-daughter movie.

TV Turn Off Week.

TV turn off week is April 21-27.

Anyone feels special when the rest of their family steps away from the television set to spend time with them. Just think, in the eighteen hundreds, they did not have television let alone electricity. They had to be creative to think of different things to do as a family.

If you are having a difficult time thinking of other things to do, here are some ideas of what to do: Start a family night, that doesn’t mean that it should be centered around the television; Schedule to go on a hike or a walk; Go to the library; Go on a picnic; Play a board game; Put on a play; Have a pillow fight; Host a tickle fight; Play catch; Have a barbecue at the park; or plan a trip together and let everyone plan a different part of the trip. Our family is planning a trip to Disneyland and we each get to plan a portion of our trip.

Those are just a few of the many, many things that you could think of to have fun with your family. Be creative. Do the things that interest each and every individual member of your family.

We have done a few of these things, and we have done a few others that I didn’t put on there. I wanted you to think of some things yourself. Here are some things about television that you might not know. They are very interesting.

Did you know?

The television is on for 7 hours and 40 minutes each day in the typical American home.

The average American watches four hours of television each day.

Fifty percent of all American households have three or more televisions.

American parents on average spend less than 40 minutes each week in meaningful conversations with their children.

56% of American children between 8 and 16 have a television in their bedroom.

Only 1 in 12 American families require their children to finish their homework before watching television.

Half of all Americans think they watch too much television.

I hope that this article will help you to rethink the time that you spend in front of the television and the time that you spend with your family.




You may have noticed the name I chose for God in the graphic. Jehovah-Shapat is the name used for God our judge. Let's allow Him to be our judge in what we watch on television.

Remote ConTroll

The last time that I did an article on the RemoteConTroll, it was about a show that was not good entertainment. This time I decided to do an article on something that might provide good entertainment.

There are many programs on television that teach or talk about the Bible. Sometimes they talk about history, or dinosaurs, or discoveries that they have made that prove the Bible’s validity. Those programs include: A&E, History Channel, and the Biography Channel. Sometimes they do talk about things that are contrary to the Bible, although many times they will talk about disasters that took place in the Bible times, or even the discovery of the ark on Mt. Ararat!

It is so refreshing to see the changes from all of the bad things that are on television now-a-days, to some shows that include some Bible based education. Some people may talk about how horrible today’s television is, but in my opinion, educational programs are getting more and more popular. And I am very excited about it. It is a great way to get more education without using a textbook.

Before watching these shows, be sure to look at the information about it on your television. Also, have your parents preview it or research it before you do watch it. They may have inappropriate words in them, or talk of evolution, which might confuse younger children.

Proverbs 15:3 says,
“The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.” (KJV)

Since that is so, then I do not think that God would want to see some of the filth that goes on that television screen now-a-days. I think that he would be much more pleased if we were watching something about him or something with good morals and values. Not only should we be watching good things for his sake, but for our own. I do not know if every one here knows this, but whatever you see will stay in your mind FOR-EV-ER!

We owe it to God, much less to ourselves, to view holy things with our eyes. I would feel so guilty if I got married and I had impure thoughts in my mind. If you were to make a sign that says “Rated J”, for Jesus approved, and place it above your television, would you be able to view what you are watching? Just think on these things before the next time you sit down to watch something.

The Remote ConTroll "America's Top Model"

The remote control is a hand held device used for browsing your televisions channels from the comfort of your sofa, but it can also become somewhat of troll if we're not wise. In this monthly column we'll take a serious look at today's television from a scriptural perspective.

“America’s Next Top Model”

On this reality show, which Tyra Banks hosts, girls are expected to basically lose all self respect and dignity. You would also have to be willing to push the competition aside just to win it all. One girl almost caught pneumonia because she had to pose in a pool in the winter time. Not only is this show unsafe for anyone, especially girls with low self esteem, it is also completely unsupportive of biblical, holy living.

Some television programs seem innocent enough when you watch it for the first time, but once you start watching it a little more, and a little more, at first you don’t hear them taking the Lord’s name in vain, and you don’t see two people posing immodestly.

...but because you have been watching the show for such a long time that you become so what of an addict. All you see is a few people ‘going for the gold’ and ‘reaching for there dreams’, which is what the world is telling you that you should do.

It’s no wonder that there is a generation full of girls crying in the bathroom while they throw up today’s meals and girls so thin that it doesn’t take a doctor to diagnose them with malnutrition. As for me, I don’t need the world to tell me what they think of me, as long as I am pleasing God. If the world considers me a wimp, goody-two-shoes, or, meaning it in an insulting manner, a Christian, I consider myself on the right path.

Allow God to control your remote.
