Healthy Steps: Allergies

by Lady Jess

*Aaaaaaaa-choooooo!*
Excuse me, it's allergy season and I thought it would be a good idea to talk about sinus health in this Healthy Steps. To start off, here are some ideas for prevention and/or fixer uppers.

Chamomile Tea is considered as a natural anti-histamine. This is very popular drink throughout the world. Having one or two cups, sweetened with your local honey, in the day gives you immunity towards the allergens. Keep in mind that you should not consume it if allergic to ragweed.

Fresh garlic is one of the best immunity builders against any type of the allergens. Garlic has proven its efficacy as decongestant and hence also used in many different types of coughs and colds. Try to have fresh garlic rather than going for powdered or dried or readymade paste. *Remember that garlic may worsen the case if you have severe acid-reflux. You need to keep the original raw garlic juice intact. It is a natural anti-biotic.

Simple and plain local honey will work. This gives fight towards the allergens and also helps you become resistant to certain pollens. Keep in mind that all the beneficial properties are lost once the honey is cooked. You can most likely find local honey at a Farmer's Market near you.

Peppermint tea is used to help relieve congestion from the nose and the respiratory tract. On the other hand, in summer, it is refreshing when icy and helps in preventing coughs and sinus problems related to the allergy.

Ginger is sufficient enough to cover up all the causative factors to allergies. This not only builds immunity but also reduces the over secretion of histamine from the body which is most uncomfortable factor during allergy attacks.

Green tea or the common table tea has natural capacity to block the over secretion of histamine. You can have one to two cups a day with honey. Instead of the green tea, you can replace that by having black tea. It is not reported as effective as green tea, but sometimes this can be used as substitute.(Side note: drinking green tea may also help you lose weight
;)

Thyme is wonderful for congestion. This tea is also used for cough, stuffy nose and sinus problems. You can prepare the tea using one teaspoon of the dried herb for each cup of water. The precaution includes the dosage should not exceed more than one cup a day.

Dilute vinegar by adding a little water and apply it with a cotton ball on the bug-bites. This prevents the allergic reaction towards the toxins secreted in a bite. You can also put some vinegar in your bath-tub.

Some have taken a dose of 400 mg of Vitamin E regularly at least for 3-4 weeks. This is known to possesses anti-allergic property.

Go for half cup of the vegetable or fruit juice or take simple plain water and add about 5 drops of castor oil. This drink should be taken on empty stomach in the morning.

Limejuice is most popular remedy for allergies. Lukewarm water is mixed with one teaspoon of honey and ½ tsp of limejuice is taken on regular basis early in the morning. This should be continued for couple of months. Taking this builds immunity towards the allergic conditions. Be careful if you are one of those people who are allergic to citrus fruits.

Oatmeal: If your allergies give you hives, oatmeal can be really useful. Pour one cup of boiling water over one tablespoon oatmeal. Let it steep for thirty minutes. Strain it, and then apply the liquid on your hives with a cotton ball. This also works to relive bug bites. Refrigerate the solution and use it in a few days. You can also make this in larger amounts and put it in your bathwater (about four cups of water and four tablespoons of oatmeal).

Apple cider vinegar: Many grandmothers used to put apple cider vinegar on any bug bites or hives to cut down on the itching. Just dilute the vinegar down with a little water and apply it with a cotton ball.

Another good idea is Jamba Juice. If you like it, order your drink then make sure that you get a free immunity boost!

Healthy Steps: Home Remedies

by Lady Jess

Since so many people are sick right now, here are some home remedies for getting better quick. We have found that it is better for our bodies to fight off illnesses as naturally as possible and many home remedies are made of ingredients you may already have in your kitchen cabinets.

For the flu, the cold, and bronchitis.

-1/2 tsp. Turmeric w/ 1/2 C warm milk 2-3 x's a day on an empty stomach.

-Bath soak in Epsom Salt 2-3 x's a week for 20 mins.

-Breathe steam infused with tea tree oil to clear sinuses and loosen phlegm
from lungs.

-Rub chest w/ olive oil & tea tree mixture or GOOT, you can also make a chest
rub with olive oil and pure eucalyptus or lavender oil.

-Fasting, it purifies the body of toxins.

-Chicken broth with fresh crushed garlic and a sprinkling of Cayenne pepper.

-1 tsp onion juice every morning to help coughing.

-You can use the GOOT oil in ear for ear infections. CAUTION: Pure tea tree
oil added directly to an ear infection will hurt. You must dilute it with olive oil and garlic oil (from fresh crushed garlic).

-Echinacea and Goldenseal complex which is available at most stores that have a pharmacy. This is a natural anti-biotic and is to be taken as directed on the package.

-Local honey: If you are suffering from allergies due to pollen you can get local honey from a Farmer's Market and eat a tablespoon a day. The local honey is made from local trees by local bees and when you digest this your body builds up an immunity to that pollen.

We have become so dependent on the government to fix us with chemical medicines. We need to get back to doing things the more natural way.

I hope that these will be of help to you. They have worked for us.

Healthy Steps: Grapefruit Health Benefits

by Mrs. Brown

Grapefruit!

The grapefruit, a relatively new fruit, is a naturally occurring hybrid from the pomelo and the sweet orange. It was first called the shaddock or the shattuck because it was introduced to many people by Captain Shaddock. It was popularized in the 19th Century after being “discovered” in Barbados in the late 18th Century. It was later called “the forbidden fruit” before becoming commonly known as the grapefruit due to its growth in clusters like grapes.

The grapefruit has been successfully used in diets and cleanses for many, many years. Scientific research has found multiple advantages as well!

NUTRIENTS:

The grapefruit is rich in beneficial nutrients including fiber, minerals, enzymes, fatty acids and amino acids. Grapefruits are teeming with vitamins A, B complex, E, and K and are especially well-known for their high Vitamin C content! Less well-known are its phytonutrients called limonoids, antioxidants, lycopene and naringenin. Did you know that not only bananas are able to boast high levels of potassium? This wonder fruit, which is most commonly found in the white or pink varieties, also abounds in folate, citric acid, flavonoids, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, and glucarates.

Okay, so grapefruit have all of these fantastic ingredients… so what? What does this actually DO for the consumer?

HEALTH BENEFITS:

The LOW GLYCEMIC INDEX aids in stabilizing blood sugars and even prevents diabetes.

STIMULATES LYMPHATIC SYSTEM

RELIEVES SORE THROATS AND COUGHS

IMPROVES CIRCULATION

METABOLIZES FAT

LOWERS CHOLESTEROL

STRENGTHENS ARTERIES

IMPROVES DIGESTION

The REMOVAL OF EXCESS ESTROGEN prevents breast cancer.

REDUCES AND CAN EVEN AID IN THE REMOVAL OF KIDNEY AND GALL STONES

PROMOTES COLON HEALTH

BOOSTS LIVER ENZYMES

NARINGENIN REPAIRS DNA

The detoxifying properties clear carcinogens from the body.

PRODUCTS:

Besides the fleshy fruit that we typically eat the grapefruit yields a tangy citrus juice. There are also many benefits from the peel, pulp and seeds. Essential oils such as limonene, citral and pinene can be extracted from the peels to be used in aromatherapy. The peel also contains large amounts of dietary fiber. The seed and pulp are used in cattle feed as well as in many human applications.

GRAPEFRUIT SEED EXTRACT/GSE:

Grapefruit Seed Extract is a bitter liquid with sweet rewards. It is purported to aid in the healing of wounds, candidiasis, throat infections, stomach ailments and more. It is hypo-allergenic with few (if any) side-effects. It is inexpensive and can be used daily for long periods of time. It raises the pH, which is helpful since many degenerative diseases effect the patient by lowering or causing an imbalance of the pH.

While GSE is ineffective against some feline diseases, it is a strong anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-parasitical for humans and most pets. It also is great at killing “bad” bacteria, while promoting the health and growth of “good” bacteria/flora in the intestinal tract and stomach.

GSE USES:

DISINFECTANT

HOUSEHOLD CLEANER

PREVENTS WATER and FOOD-BORNE ILLNESSES (particularly good when travelling)

USEFUL AS A NATURAL INSECTICIDE

A SAFE AND EFFECTIVE VEGGIE WASH

WOUND CARE (EVEN SCARS)

REMOVES SKIN BACTERIA (ACNE WASH)

CAUTIONS:

If you are taking medications, make sure they do not adversely interact with grapefruits. Never take meds with a glass of grapefruit juice and make sure to read up on your meds and discuss any possible concerns with a doctor or pharmacist. Some medications, such as Blood Pressure meds, have been found to have IMPROVED absorption while in taking grapefruit products, but some medications are made ineffective by the same products.

Additionally, according to juicing-for-health.com “Excessive consumption of any citrus juices can leach calcium from the body system, causing decay of the bones and teeth.”

PREPARATION IDEAS:

Even if you are not intending to use the grapefruit peel, you should still wash the fruit in cool water before cutting to prevent anything on the peel from entering the flesh of the fruit. This is true of all fruit and vegetable preparation.

Grapefruit can be peeled and eaten like an orange or cut in half and cut into wedges and eaten with a spoon. You can even purchase spoons with serrated edges made just for eating grapefruit! You might want to beware of being squirted in the eye though! This popular method of eating grapefruit has often resulted in a juicy surprise!

In asking friends how they like to eat grapefruit quite a few were in the practice of sprinkling them with one of the following toppings:

Sugar

Brown sugar

Cinnamon-sugar

Powdered sugar

I’ve been told that if you drizzle honey on the cut fruit and broil it or warm it in a toaster oven for 2-4 minutes it makes a delicious dessert and can be served warm with a fresh sprig of mint! Doesn’t that sound just divine? I’ve also been told that if you let the sweetener soak into the fruit for 5 minutes or more before eating that improves the flavor even more!

Grapefruit is delicious in a green salad with chicken and coconut for a tropical flair or gives a wonderful zip to any fruit salad or compote! Grapefruit chutney or salsa is a cool and refreshing dip and it was even suggested to me that grapefruit might be good frozen into popsicles or ice cubes to add flavor to a beverage. YUM! My mouth is watering just THINKING ABOUT it!

Toronja Rellena is a sweetened grapefruit stuffed with honey and dolce de leche is a snack usually sold along the roadside on weekends in Central America. I’d love to try that someday!

RECIPES:

Winter Fruit Bowl

"This fruit salad goes well with any meat dish. The blend of grapefruit and cranberries gives it a tangy flavor-- and a pretty holiday look."

Grapefruit Pie

This recipe was given to me by my friend, Elizabeth King!

2 cups graham crumbs

1/2 cup melted butter

2 teaspoons grated grapefruit rind

5 eggs

2/3 cup sugar

1 cup grapefruit juice

1/3 cup butter, chopped

2 1/2 cups whipping cream

Healthy Steps: A New Year of Health

by SisterLisa

by Sisterlisa

This book, 'First Place 4 Health' is written from a Christian perspective. While the world says we should take care of the mind and body, they take it a step higher.
Their site explains the steps to balanced living in the following areas:
  • Physical
  • Spiritual
  • Emotional
  • Nutritional
  • Devotional

This really caught my eye. They use scripture memory to help gain the new lifestyle we all should follow. When we think WWJD, we should also think WWJE, eat? How much would he eat? We know for certain that he would not indulge in unhealthy eating nor an overabundance of it.

Here is an excerpt from an interview with the books author, Carole Lewis.

"This program is for men and women of all ages who want to lose excess weight, lower cholesterol, learn better eating habits, or become more disciplined in the areas of prayer, Bible study, and exercise. The reasons why people are overweight are numerous. Some have always been "the fat kid." Others were once fit, but they gained weight after a major life change (i.e. pregnancy) or because of a health condition that hinders movement. For some, the extra pounds feel like protection for a deep emotional wound. Many people struggle with weight simply because life moves too fast and doesn't accommodate a healthy lifestyle. Whether you need to lose 100 pounds or you just can't seem to get rid of those last ten, First Place 4 Health is for you. However, if all you're looking for is a diet or a quick fix to lose weight, then this program will disappoint you. But consider this: statistics tell us that ninety-five percent of people who lose weight gain it back again."

This book sounds like a healthy perspective of nutrition and exercise. So much of the world today is focused on quick fixes, but what we really need is a lifestyle change, not just another diet.

Something new that we got this year are ankle weights to wear while we do simple tasks at home. We stop periodically throughout the day to do lunges to strengthen the muscles on our legs and use soup cans for weights for our arms. Every little bit helps. Sometimes in the winter, especially if you live in harsh weather, people lose their muscle due to lack of movement. Any mount of time you can give your body to keep your muscle tone gives you strength and energy for the day. It also makes it easier to get outdoors when the temperatures rise again. Be sure to check out their blog too.

Thank you Lady Jess for allowing me to be a guest contributor to your column.

Healthy Steps: Winter Treats

by Lady Jess

Well, the Cultural Christmas season is here. Many count it as time for peppermint, cookies, brownies, blondies, cakes, gingerbread, candy turtles, and pies. That means sugar, fat, and a new New Year's Resolution.

Here are some winter baking recipes that you can use with brown sugar.

Almond-'Sugar' cookies

1-1/4 cup almond flour
1 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup butter, at room temperature
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla

Pre-heat oven to 350 F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or a non-stick baking mat. Stir together flour and Splenda. Blend in butter, egg and vanilla until well mixed. Form into 1-inch balls on a cookie sheet and flatten each with a fork. Sprinkle with additional Splenda. Bake for 8 minutes or until set but not brown. Allow to cool for 2 minutes on baking sheet then remove to wire racks to cool.

Snicker doodles

Makes about 26

1/2 cup butter, softened
1-1/2 cups ground almonds
1 cup granulated brown sugar
1 large egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon

In a medium bowl, beat butter until creamy. Add half the ground almonds, 1 cup brown sugar, egg, vanilla, baking soda and cream of tartar. Beat until well combined. Beat in remaining ground almonds. Cover and chill in bowl for 1 hour. Pre-heat oven to 350 F. In a small bowl, combine the 2 tablespoons brown sugar and the cinnamon; mix well. Roll chilled dough into 1-inch balls. Gently roll each ball in the cinnamon-sugar mixture to coat and place 2 inches apart on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake 10-12 minutes until lightly browned at the edges. Carefully remove from pan to cooling rack to cool completely.

Brown sugar cookies

2 cups sifted flour, less if possible
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1 egg
1 tablespoon 15% cream (any kind of cream from 10% to 35% will work fine)
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
granulated sugar, for decorating

Blend 1 cup flour, baking powder, and salt. Beat together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg, vanilla, and cream. Stir the flour mixture into the butter mixture, then add enough of the remaining 1 cup flour to make the dough stiff enough to roll. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill several hours. Preheat oven to 375 F. Place on a lightly floured cutting board and roll to 1/8" thickness. Use floured cookie cutters to cut into shapes. Place on an ungreased baking sheet, sprinkle with granulated sugar. Bake 8 minutes.

Be cautious not to give into temptation and eat all your sweet goodies this season. We can enjoy teats from time to time, but do not overindulge.

Proverbs 23:12, "For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags."
Isn't it interesting that he names gluttony in the same verse as a drunkard? Be wise with your winter delicacies meeting up with your taste buds. ;O)

I hope this has been a neat help for all of you.

Healthy Steps: Spiritual Nutrition

So far in all of my Healthy Steps posts I have been talking about physical health. I think that it is about time that I speak on spiritual health. Being healthy is not just physically and it is not just spiritually, because the Bible says that you should be physically healthy as well as spiritually so do not slack on one to get caught up in the other. Both are important. Although, spiritual health is very important.
To be spiritually healthy, you must be constantly in the Word, and keeping up to date in your prayer life. Be sure that every day you spend some time personally with God in devotion. I find that it is easier to do my devotions in the morning before I do anything else, so that I will not forget or be too tired late at night to do it. And, when I do it earlier in the day, I find that my day goes along smoother and I get more accomplished. God commands us, in the Bible, to spend some time each day alone with him. How would you feel if your best friend or family would only talk to you before and after meals and when they needed something. Horrible, wouldn't you? God feels the same way when those are the only times that he gets to hear from you.
Also, God enjoys helping us, but it sometimes seems selfish of us to always be demanding things of him. Don't you think that sometimes God just wants you to praise him? He is so wonderful. Don't you think he deserves all the praise in the world? Here are 9 steps to a better prayer life, they are part of a message that my pastor preached once.

1. Write you requests down
2. Write down those whose prayers have been similar and answered.
3. Ask for forgiveness of sins.
4. Write down the reasons it would be good to get them answered.
5. Write down his response.
6. Thank him and remind him that you will be thankful.
7. Remind him that you will praise him.
8. Remind him that you will not be selfish.
9. Remind him how hard you worked.

Pretty good, right?

God enjoys being praised, don't you? I know I do. I hope that this article has helped you. I will leave you with this one last thought.

"If you don't prepare to pray, God won't prepare to answer."

Don't be so SLUGgish

Once, when I was gardening, I found many slugs and snails amongst the weeds. As I pulled the weeds and got rid of the pests, I began to think. So many Believers are not doing anything for the cause of Christ. So many are sluggish and laid back in their walk with Him.

The Bible says in John 15:2 "Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit."

The same goes for weeds and slugs. If God finds a weed or a pest in his 'garden', he will take it out. If he finds that a plant is putting forth beautiful flowers, he will trim it back to allow more flowers to bloom.

Also, slugs eat the leaves of plants, so be sure not to criticize or bring down your family in Christ. Snails and slugs shrivel up and die if you place salt on them.

Mark 9:50, "Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another."

If we find ourselves cringing at the teaching of the Word of God, then maybe we have become a snail. Strive not to be a snail in your Christian life.

There are other ways that we are slugs as well and that is in our physical life. It's very important that we take time each day to take care of the bodies that the Lord gave us. God gave us muscles to give us strength, but if we neglect our muscles they become weak. Make a point each day to care for your body by adding strength to your arms and legs.

Here are a few ways you can help with keeping up your strength:

1. Stand against the bathroom counter facing away from the sink. Place your hands behind you on the counter and allow your arms to slowly lower your body down past the counter top. Have your knees slightly bent and allow your arms to do the work of lowering and raising your body.

2. Before you get out of bed for the day do some leg lifts. You can lay on your side and slowly lift each leg and slowly lower it. If you go too fast you're defeating the purpose. Do 3 sets of 15 each morning until you build more strength and then you can increase it to 20 or 30, depending on your ability. Not only will this help build strength, but it will raise your adrenaline to help you get going a bit quicker in the morning.

3. When you're sitting down for a movie, you can lift your knees and this helps your abdomen. Start with 3 reps of 10 and build from there.

4. I also recommend that you do squats each day. Every person is different so you may want to start off doing a few each morning and increasing by 2 each day until you build more strength. You will be sore at first, but don't give up! The more strength you build the more energy you'll have and more stamina as well.

Eat Your Vegetables Day

This day was created to encourage healthy eating. Placed in the middle of the National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month, this day was intended to promote a healthy diet. I encourage all of you parents to let your kids help prepare dinner. Plan that every meal be vegetables, or have them in it.

Here are some vegetable recipes that you could do on that day:

Cheesilicious Cauliflower
Ingredients: 1 medium head of cauliflower(broken into florets),1/2 cup low-fat mayonnaise,1/2 tsp. onion salt or 1 tsp. purple onion finely chopped, 3/4 tsp. mustard,1/2 cup Medium Cheddar cheese.

Wash cauliflower (don't dry). Place cauliflower in casserole dish. Cover with microwave safe plastic wrap. Microwave 8-9 minutes until tender(depending on wattage of microwave). Combine mayonnaise, onion salt or onion and mustard. Spoon onto cauliflower and sprinkle cheese on top. Microwave 1-2 minutes to melt cheese. Serves 4 hungry people. :)

Baked Parmesan Tomatoes
Ingredients: 2 (14 1/2 oz.) cans whole tomatoes drained and quartered, 4 Tbsp. seasoned whole wheat bread crumbs, 1/2 tsp. Italian seasoning(Pampered Chef is best), 1/2 tsp. garlic salt, 4 Tbsp. Freshly grated Parmesan cheese, 2 Tbsp. margarine. (I Can't Believe it's Not Butter), Olive Oil

Place tomatoes in a 1 quart baking dish (lightly oiled with Olive Oil). Combine bread crumbs, Italian seasoning and garlic salt. Sprinkle over tomatoes. Top with cheese and add a dollop of margarine. Bake uncovered at 325° for 15-20 minutes (until lightly browned). Makes 4-6 servings.

Crystal Glazed Carrots
Ingredients: 1/2 lb. fresh carrots or baby carrots, 1/2 stick margarine, 6 Tbsp. brown sugar, 1 tsp. cinnamon(Pampered Chef or freshly grated), 1 tsp. ground fresh ginger (optional)

Clean carrots and cut into bite-size pieces. Steam 10 minutes in a small amount of boiling water (just until tender). Melt margarine in a large skillet over low heat. Add brown sugar, cinnamon and ginger. Cook 1-2 minutes. Add hot carrots, stirring well to coat. Remove when shiny and well glazed. (*Note: using real butter may result in burned butter. Butter burns faster than margarine)

Crunch-Monster Veggie Salad
Ingredients: 2-3 cups fresh crisp broccoli, 2-3 cups cauliflower, 1 cup (4 oz.) grated medium cheddar cheese, 1/3 cup chopped purple onion, 1/4 cup raisins, 1/2 cup sunflower seeds

Dressing ingredients: 1/2 cup low-fat mayonnaise, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 Tbsp. cider vinegar

Mix and pour over salad. Toss and then refrigerate 1 hour.

Just before serving add: 1/2 cup sunflower seeds

Serves 4-6.

Healthy Steps

My mother and I have decided to eat healthier and it has helped us to keep each other accountable. We both eat 100% whole wheat grains, Fat free milk, Splenda in her coffee, honey instead of sugar in our cereal, and sugar free candy when we have a craving. We also try to cook as much as possible instead of going out to dinner at a restaurant or fast food place. Help your mother with meal planning so as not to take up to much time deciding on what to make. Also, try preparing the meal ahead of time and freezing it so that all you would have to do is defrost and heat up. That is a great idea if you know that you will be extra busy that week and you will not have time to prepare an entire meal.

After dinner sometimes, we try to go out for a walk together. You can help your mom get the dishes done so that you can go out on a walk. Sometimes after we are finished with our school work, we will go to the park and walk around a bit. Working along with mom in healthy living helps bring more to your relationship. Have fun making healthy steps, one day at a time.
