Flight of The First Zeppelin

In Germany, the zeppelin first flew on July 2nd, 1900. 1908 postcard of the Graf ZeppelinIt was created by Ferdinand von Zeppelin. You can read more and learn about the First Zeppelins.

During World War I (WWI), Germany used Zeppelins to drop bombs on Great Britain. The zeppelins were actually not that effective. Planes were much better suited for air raids than zeppelins. In fact, Great Britain’s planes shot down quite a few of the zeppelins. By the end of WWI, over sixty zeppelins had been made but only seventeen survived the war. The last zeppelin attack on Great Britain was done in October 1917.

After World War 1, zeppelins were used for commercial purposes. People flew to different places in them. After the sad accident of the Hindenburg in 1937, zeppelins were no longer used for commercial purposes.

July 4th is Independence Day. Thankfully, that is not the only day of the year that we are independent! For Americans, every day is "Independence Day" because we are free every day. Let us not take for granted our freedom or the fact that thousands upon thousands of men have fought for our freedom and many have died doing so.
